Kyushu University and ' Japan in Today's World'
Founded as one of Japans seven imperial universities, Kyushu University has a proud tradition dating back to 1911. Since then it has grown into a prestigious institute of higher education, with a leading role at the cutting edge of numerous fields of research today. At Kyushu University there are now 17,500 students taking a wide variety of courses supervised by a total of 2,350 academic staff. Nine years ago, as part of our constant efforts to encourage open cultural exchange, we created Japan in Todays World (JTW), an innovative short-term program that allows international students to study in Japan using English as the medium of instruction. The first of its kind to be introduced at a national university, JTW has since developed to meet the diverse needs of our growing numbers of students from all around the world.
The JTW program gives English-speaking students access to academic life in Japan and also offers a full range of Japanese language courses. JTW, however, is not just a language program, or simply a language immersion experience. At JTW, the students will be exposed to a variety of experiences and challenges, no matter what field you are majoring in, each designed to broaden the students understanding and appreciation for Japanese culture and society. Through the use of such program elements as the Independent Study Project and numerous guided field studies, students will be encouraged to become specialists in various fields of study regarding Japan. With this as its mission, JTW is designed to offer highly motivated students from abroad with the opportunity to study in a challenging academic atmosphere and to live in one of Japans fastest growing and friendliest cities.
